Jerry Lee Lewis vs. Jutta Hipp

10 Aug

As there’s still hardly any news on a Jerry Lee Lewis box from Bear Family we’ll show some pictures from the Jutta Hipp box, coming from BE! Records in October:

Jutta Spread 1 Jutta Spread 2 Jutta Spread 3 Jutta Spread 4

Apart from her music the box will include a big fat hardcover book with a biography of Jutta Hipp (in English and German), illustrated with private photos, press clippings – and many of her fabulous paintings and drawings, reaching back to her art school days in Leipzig, Germany in the 1940s.

More to follow soon – watch this space.

Oh – and here’s the Jerry Lee cover:

Something new

5 May

First copy of the forthcoming Tennessee Ernie Ford box set from Bear Family has just arrived, and it looks like this:

Later this year there will be a 40th Anniversary box (incl. a massive book, a DVD, and three CDs with exclusive Bear songs – among them one by Ry Cooder, singing “I’d like to be on Bear Family when I die…”, plus the long-awaited Jerry Lee Lewis set (17 CDs!). File alongside the Chuck Berry box.

Currently in production (and expected in June) is another long-awaited box – the second volume in BE! Record‘s series of ‘Oddball Labels’ collections. Like The Texas Box it’s a 10 CD box, accompanied by a 208-page coffee-table book, featuring rare singles from Michigan, not surprisingly titled “The Michigan Box”. Here are sample pages from the book:

What’s coming up (…or is still cookin’)

22 Jun

A couple of our projects have release dates scheduled (and re-scheduled) now, so this is what you can expect in late summer or autumn:

Johnson City Preorder

“Can You Sing Or Play Old-Time Music?”
The Johnson City Sessions 1928-1929

4-CD box with a handsomely illustrated book – basically the follow-up to Bear Family’s Grammy-nominated “Bristol Sessions” set. The book has some fascinating stories and includes a treasure trove of pictures from 1920s rural Appalachia.
(The picture above shows the ‘point of pre-order’ at a recent festival in Johnson City, Tennessee)

Jerry Lee Lewis
Southern Roots – The Original Sessions

Double vinyl album (in a thick cardboard gatefold!) and 2-CD set (with even more outtakes) of Jerry Lee’s notorious sessions with producer Huey P. Meaux. Includes session outtakes and crazy chatter. The killer is accompanied by a stellar cast of sidemen incl. Tony Joe White, Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn, Doug Sahm and Carl Perkins.

Big D Cover Test

Big D Jamboree
Live from the stage of the Sportatorium, Dallas, Texas

Another Bear Family box coming in autumn – 8 CDs of live recordings from the famous “Big D Jamboree” show incl. Gene Vincent, Riley Crabtree, Ronnie Dee and other wildcats from the 1950s and 60s country/rockabilly circuit.

…and, still in Texas, another big box (not from the Bear camp) with 10 discs of crazy one-off singles from (more or less) obscure labels from the state of Texas. This comes with a 200-page book, filled to the brim with illustrations of vinyl labels, picture sleeves and other findings. Includes a “Collector’s rating” for every track!

And finally, of course, the “Black Europe” project is ready to go to the printers: a slipcase with 2 coffee-table books and 44 CDs.

Next up: Hank Thompson, dangerous rhythms, Chuck Berry, and several Caribbean projects.
