The Food Of Love

19 Feb

Besides working on exciting new releases about George Jones and Arthur Big Boy Crudup (and the Florida Box, of course) there’s a new series of sketches in the works, depicting musicians from all over the world. Here are the first few (from around 1,000. Possibly.)

    Did you say George Jones?

Is this by any chance the long over due early (Starday) years box set we’ve been foaming at the mouth for so long for? Sure hope so!

    Nice sketches.

Yes it is – Bear Family’s “The Truly Complete Starday & Mercury Recordings 1954-61”, 6 CDs plus a massive hardcover book, coming early summer…

I won’t go on about just how long we have waited for this set. Suffice to say that I have aged somewhat in the interim but just glad to know that it is in the offing.Wont bother mentioning the Country artists whose work needs finalising by Bear Family as now that Richard Weize has moved on the Country output on the label
will have to stand aside for Jazz. Rhythm & Blues.Blues and
        Rock N’ Roll.

Don’t know why you think the “country output will have to stand aside” – just watch Bear Family’s release schedule!

The George Jones set is without doubt a major highlight for me and from past experience I know it will be a fantastic production.
I would dearly love to see the Merle Haggard Epic years, plus Patsy Cline, Johnny Paycheck and Mel Tillis get the Bear treatment. Encouraging to read that Bear Family’s
    release schedule may bear fruit!
    Thank you.

By my reckoning we have had 3 Country releases from Bear Family since 1 January 2016. That is Huskey, Ramsey and the Knoxville Sessions. With the projected releases for July 2016 listing nil Country releases I fear the George Jones set will certainly not see an early Summer release as was promised. But then ..what’s new about that after 5 years. I’m afraid the Bear Family release schedule is mighty light on Country and heavy on other genres and has been for some time now. How do I know? I’m not spending money on Bear releases that’s how!

Do you really consider the Bill Ramsey set a “Country” release? 😉

Nope..but it got your attention. Now we’re down to two. On a serious note is there any chance that Bear Family will one day complete the Merle Haggard story? So far the Hag story has been beautifully presented in Bear’s outstanding style but we need the Epic, Curb, etc recordings to complete the set.Thank you very much..
